Something about sharing

26 Aug

My parents love to tell me stories about how when I was a little girl, I would never share my toys. If I was playing with one toy and another child tried to play with a different toy, according to my parents, I would scoot over there, grab it, and say “mine.”

I used to be embarrassed by this, but now I think it’s pretty illustrative of how people change. What do I mean? Well, yesterday that article I wrote for the Company’s intranet was posted (I promise to share it later), and I received a lot of great, positive feedback. Many of my colleagues encouraged me to continue writing and to consider blogging, too.

Thing is, I already do blog. I just haven’t told many people yet.

… and so maybe it’s time for I learn how to share my writing.  What do you think?

One Stephanie Post, coming right up …

We all have blogged from work, but have you blogged for work?  I haven’t.  In 2007 I managed my company’s first attempts to blog, but didn’t mastermind any witty snippets.  But my number flashes: I’m about to become a corporate blogger, and I couldn’t be more paranoid!

My topic is pretty generic, and you might imagine that after posting here and on the anonymous cosmopolitan blog I keep with two girlfriends,  I’d have no problem with this.  But, I’m going to let you in on a little secret: I suffer from an incredible case of writer’s block. One might be shocked by this given that my professional career depends on my ability to regularly and effectively communicate – especially through writing!! I digress …

My task is to share what it’s like to have transferred from one arm of the company into anther one, over 4100 miles (>6600km) away. What’s challenging for me is that there are a thousand things I could write, a million things I could say. This opportunity has been incredible! It’s been a mess, a joy, a bother, a blast, and on and on.  How much background information is enough? What do they want to know? What would impress or surprise my colleagues, my superiors, THE CEO OF THE ENTIRE COMPANY, etc.  And really, how can I make them laughHow can I make them care? Do I want them to want more? Should I commit to a series? Do I need a theme? How much is this going to raise my profile at work? Is it as big a deal as I’m making it out to be?

If you have ideas, please share them! If you were my colleague – old or new – what would make you care?  What would you really want to know? It’s not about me, me, me. It’s about you,  you, you, them, them, them! (Yes, note taken, and my future posts will be much more for you!)  Write for your audience, right? Right.  … I think!!!
